Melissa Western in "Ella meets Marilyn"

Date: 5 March 2010
Details: Friday 5 March, Saturday 6 March @ 7pm
Sunday 7 March @ 6pm
The Butterfly Club

It’s the 50’s and everyone in showbiz wants to work the Mocambo. The Hollywood club's extravagant Latin American-theme includes glass cages holding live cockatoos, and macaws, cocktails and lots of beautiful people. It’s ‘the living room of the stars’ and jazz music sounds as they dance til dawn.

But if you’re Ella Fitzgerald you don’t get a look in – because you’re black. Unless one of your biggest fans is Marilyn Monroe. In the mid 50s Ella became the first African-American to perform at the Mocambo, after Marilyn sweet talked the owner into the booking – and promised to take a front row table every night if he did. He agreed. Marilyn sat front and centre. Ella sang.

Join sultry songstress Melissa Western and accompanist Sue Porter for a night of tribute to two of her biggest muses, Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe. Inspired by the unlikely real life friendship between Ella and Marilyn, this will be a show of exquisite music, fascinating stories and more than just a little pizzazz.
